ID:	469382 After a big skunk yesterday had my doubts today.
found this on a little gravel bar. Appears to be grounded slightly on the base. Looks like older flaking on one side. The other side is all over the place. Obviously used as a drill...shows no signs of Beveling..it’s right at 3 1/2”... I’m thinking possibly a st. Charles on this one. Your thoughts are welcomed...I can send better pics if needed....✌️ Click image for larger version

Dont think it falls into the dovetail family, looks more basal notched but still archaic. Nice piece!

That's a style you don't see every day. Look at that thing. I like it. From the pics the drill end looks kind of flat. Seems like if it was used it would be more worn down. Very interesting piece.

That's a amazing find for sure. Unless you find a Paleo I'd say probably your year maker. Parallel flaking and everything

Has to be very early Archaic like something that was Paleo then reworked to early Archaic.

Wow. If that had a raised tail section it could do mac 5.

That is one weird piece. Just gotta wonder what it was made for. Never seen anything like it. I would rule out dovetail, notching and base not dove. Have no idea of type, the base notching draws a blank from me.

By looking at the work as in the parallel flaking I'm thinking it was a Paleo blade and a Archaic person found the blade and then reworked it to their needs by the base of it. That being said I'm gonna say it's a Palarchaic there made a new word. It's a very beautiful artifact. Center frame

Now that’s a unique and really cool find!!!

Why it’s that way? I have no clue but I’m sure someone valued it as a prized tool for what ever they needed at the time!

I like that”palarchaic” lol... I’ll probably never know for sure on the type. But I’m sticking with st. Charles. There are many different varieties, they do not all have the classic “dovetail” look. Some have wide bases others don’t. Although rare some can be basal notched...........✌️

If there are any artifact shows near you I would take it and ask some of the collectors what they think on it.

That is one of the coolest points I have seen found in a long time. Congrats!

I'll echo a couple of others, it isn't a variety of Dovetail. The middle part of the flaking reminds me of some really nice Scottsbluff flaking, but it clearly isn't that. There is a side notch point called a Meadowood found east of you, and those can occasionally found notched on the base, but the flaking isn't right. Some of the Micro-Notched points can be really well made, but that's a rather jumbled up type (probably several different types represented.)

I'm going to come back to this one...

I believe that's the first time I have ever heard you say that in all the years I've read your responses. I'm stumped it would be nice to know what it is.
