  • Maddies' blade

My 9 year old daughter Madison found this sweet little blade when she broke open a clump of dirt that was dug from the ponds edge. She was extremely happy and her brother and sister were extremely green.....
we have found several of these here. I have posted them before and they are a little frustrating as there is no "type" that they fall into, yet they are extremely well made and complete. Super fine workmanship and reduced to a very thin tool. I believe this one is KFR. Middle of montana.

i suspect this is paleo,, side scraper or uniface tool,,just a guess,i have a side scraper as surface find new england

Hi Chad. Beautiful lithic maaterial for sure. The tool appears to be a bi-face yet appears to have some of the attributes of a uniface tool. Therefore, I think it belongs with some of the really old artifacts you've found. It looks like possibly some kind of hand held knife that was not hafted. Just a guess of course.

They definitely have extremely fine craftmanship. Not some impromptu tool they banged out just to get a job done. Maybe they were created for a specific purpose like skinning buffalo? We find them in obvious butcher areas. Choppers, broken bones, and uniface tools are usually in the same context.

If those are found nowhere else Chad why not name that style yourself.
            You could call them Madison

Hey Chad, That is a real nice knife. You are right that sure does look like Knife River Flint. Especially since it has the fossilized plant matter. That North Dakota material didn't have to travel that far to get to you in Montana: I know that some was carried all the way to Ohio in ancient times. Obviously a special material to the ancient people.

I would love to, but i believe there is already a point with that "handle". I might repost some of the others in addition to hers. Maybe someone will weigh in with new info..?

I will. Gonna be awhile. Work and calling bulls for hunters is not giving me time to take pics and post. Remember, only a phone here and the service out here leaves a lot to be desired... uploading pics is up to the verizon gods...
