  • New from the creek.

I did a little hunt and found a couple of pieces.

    A lumpy biface. Crazy patina.

A little point with an asymmetrical blade.

A tantalizing broken base. It's fanned into a duck-bill type shape which I haven't seen before.

And a fossilized something....maybe a tooth or coral.

Here are a couple of different angles on the tooth.

I did some googling and the closest match was a horse tooth. I don't think that's possible though.

Other members might have a better idea on type.. I’d think a large herbivore from deer family ....Anything is possible , I’d defiantly picked it up too !

And here's a more detail on the broken stem that has me very curious.

      I like the strong flaking

It has a definite flare to the base that reminds me of a duck bill.

Do you think what I call a broken base is really a scraper? Hmm...

I'm in Napa County, California, BTW.

Hopefully a fossil expert can tell me about the 'tooth'.

Correction noted . Since you have that nice obsidian in your area sharp as heck . Black flint ? I was thinking there was edge work on that base hard to tell you are holding it . You know your area but all things are possible to me . Point breaks material repurposed. May be an ovoid which in my area in Georgia can be scrappers .

Ron Kelly has looked at tools I have found and can tell me
by the angle and work what it was used for . I had a turtle back scrapper quite large palm size and he commented by the flaking it was probably used for wood . There are so many variables right ?

                Not a correction, Tam.

                You might be right.

I took it for a broken base and thought it interesting (and possibly type-able), as it's so distinct.

Now you have me questioning myself.

In many ways, it makes more sense as a scraper that's lost it's handle.

I would value Ron Kelly's opinion on anything to do with lithics.

                Maybe he'll chime in...
