  • Paleo Heartbreaker

Have been out of the country the past couple weeks and was finally able to make it over to one of my honey holes on Thursday. The owners informed me they had plowed the entire 40 acre field which hadn't been touched in the past three years. They unfortunately have put the property up for sale and they needed to clean it up a bit. (Hopefully it takes a while for them to sell it....) Anyways, its been harrowed but very little rain so I'll be trekking back over there as soon as that spot gets a downpour.

This was a heartbreaking find for me. I've yet to find any paleo points and like all hunters dream of finding that perfect clovis. When I saw this at first I actually thought it was a paddle drill until I picked it up. I instantly knew what it was. Fluted on both sides with two flutes on one and what looks like an impact fracture on the other? Correct me if wrong. This site has now produced everything from Paleo (although broken) to Mississippian. Will be praying the other half pops out after a good rain.

There were others found as well. A nice chunky drill, ancient reworked Savannah River, strange triangle type, a well made Madison with tiny tip ding, and another unifaced stemmed point with tip damage. Plus some nice preforms/blades/scrapers.

So how hot is it in your part of Georgia? On the fragment it would be hard for me to guess until you find the other piece just not enough to know imo. I found a base like that 5 years ago and am still looking each time I go to that field. Glad you finally got out to look. The property I was on for the last 3 months is up for sale to. I’m going to miss it when it sells but you would have to be a millionaire to afford just 50 acres of it

Looks like a fluted point base to me...

Could be but nothing here fluted just thinning flakes. Have to take your word for it

I dove through my box of brokes hoping maybe just maybe I already had the other part, but not that lucky.

Thank you. Admittedly I was disappointed but it’s hard to feel down when you’re finding artifacts. And I found a few to go in some frames.

Unfortunately I think when the farming machinery hits them it will send the other half far away cause I have never found the other half of anything in a field unless a deer stepped on it

The base piece does have a paleo look about it but it also has a look about it of lots of other types. Just not enough there to say what it may be.

I don't have any paleo point to compare it to but it does feel smooth.

After looking at it for a few days and getting feedback from here and on facebook I'm definitely open to it not being paleo. Went through some points from the same site and found some where this piece could have fit. Son Anderson said on FB it was the bottom of a stem as well.

Who knows. Hopefully the other side gets found, weather its paleo or not! Still holding out hope thats a flute and not just basal thinning. The "paleo" piece is still much thinner than the base in the photo.
