  • Possible fire popped tip

    Looks like it to me but never held one so not sure. Found on the high and dry ground at my site in Lawrence Co Tenn this past April. Click image for larger version

    Side note. Why did they heat the rocks? What are characteristics of heat treated pieces?

      Usually when certain types of rocks are heated, they become easier to knap. They also get more colorful, but knappability is what they were looking for.

        I sent you a nice message that didn’t take this morning .
        yes heat treating makes s nice color and will have a waxy feel to it . Burlington Chert heat treated becomes a pink . Looks like a broken tip of a point , knife ..

          Yes it’s burnt. Prolly not heat treated, just got thrown into a fire or a fire was built over where it was lost. The pop outs on the flat surfaces are called pot lids ... JJ

          LMan I have found points like that and always wondered if they just got thrown in the fire with the meat . Like it was broke off and lost in the kill . Just dreaming about the past .
