That's a large natural, geologic formation where softer stone has eroded out beneath the larger stone. It could have been softer sandstone beneath the large diabase, or basaltic formation. If it would continue to erode, the large stone would balance itself on a hard stone pedestal, and those are known as cap rocks. This is a common formation seen in many of the rock cliffs through out the south west, in Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Nat'l Park , and in some eastern parks where the rocks are exposed to this kind of erosional weathering.

These are the sort of things people see as Native carvings, and it's like visualizing an image out of cloud formations. Your imagination can make these into anything you want them to be! Mother Nature does this on purpose and then laughs about it later!!
The rocks in the one photo look like brecciated tuff, left over from volcanic activity. The petroglyphs look like ancient Hopi or Pueblo and painted on the rocks with iron based pigments.Last edited by pkfrey; 12-01-2019, 07:30 PM.

Easy! First set is a) Big Hungry Rock b) Hungry’s Buddy Rock having a snack. Second set is work of Native American enjoying his peyote, putting makeup and adornments on Girl Rocks (why Hungry’s got his mouth hangin’ open....)Last edited by Cecilia; 12-02-2019, 05:46 AM.Digging in GA, ‘bout a mile from the Savannah River

That looks like a very cool and relaxing place . It may have been a very spiritual or sacred place to those who painted their artwork there. Awesome landscape. Dont see much of that here in N'Eastern Illinois...nice post. The chase is better than the catch...

Tom writes Haiku all the time. One can’t find now ‘specially Haiku. Also, think remember once used analogy “fish scale sky”! Best I can sound is Huck Finn, tho sometimes sound like Pain but not in this medium!Last edited by Cecilia; 12-09-2019, 10:34 AM.
