    This simple paper by Dr Makoto Kowta is an excellent resource for anybody interested in Native American archeology. Though primarily concerned with California material, the technical info is universal.
    It's a gem.

      If I had read this article when found obsidian, I wouldn’t have needed to ask you if they were spalls; I woulda known because not even tiny smidge of light-colored, rough cortex left. (Of course, I’d just learned what “spall” meant when pmed you!)
