Some time back Uncle Trav posted a suggestion about the Squire & Davis Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley for those interested in Mound Builder societies. For the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee ($8.00 and change at Amazon) the book Archaeology of Mississippi by Calvin Brown gives another view of these people’s lives. It is more localized (only Mississippi) but ) but it was published in 1926 about investigations from as early as 1912 which is before intense agricultural, need for road fill and apathy erased many, many mounds from the landscape. It is not very technical at all and shows a large amount of artifacts but has minimal information about them. One of the sites mentioned is a very large site where many mounds both large and small were leveled to build the town that I live in. Mr. Brown gave Mr. Clark who is mentioned frequently in the book an autographed first edition copy that is in our library in one of the cases with artifacts from the area. Also there is a copy in circulation. I kept it checked out for years until I was able to find better information on my own. This is a reprint but I saw an original on a book site listed for $245
so I was glad to be able to get a copy of it so cheap.
