Clint mentions is aunts Laura Somersal and Mabel Mckay (who were both famous basket makers) taught him. Laura Somersal also compiled a Wappo dictionary. Both women actively worked to maintain their culture and passing as much on to Clint must have been part of that. Not sure if he has siblings (sisters, even) that also learned. I do know he has daughters and granddaughters that will continue the family tradition.

Says men and women both made baskets.

Cool Article Tom. Great history. Here’s an Original Oil Painting done by a well known Yurok’ Indian Woman named Vera Ryerson’. She was born 1916’ in Northern Humboldt county. Some of her Baskets are in the Crocker’ Art Gallery. I actually found this painting on Ebay’ 20 years ago from a seller in Spokane WA. Veras’ Daughter lived in Spokane and was quite educated and well known. That’s no doubt how it ended up there.Last edited by Sage hen jack; 11-24-2021, 08:28 PM.
