  • two new acquisitions, boat stone?

I just acquired two new artifacts from a friend and one is a grooved plummet and he called the other one a boat stone. I don't know much about a boat stone but I know they were found in So.Illinois.  Any help would be appreciated . Thanks Dean

Right size for boat-stone but it's overall design is telling me no.
But what do I know I was not there when they used it, for whatever. :dunno:
The plummet has some very distinctive color.
Sure would like to see better pics of that.

It is a "Rock" when it's on the ground.
It is a "Specimen" when picked up and taken home.

Thanks Jess, I scanned two sides of the plummet maybe this will help. It looks like in might have been in a fire.  Also could you or someone tell when a boat stone would have been made and what was there purpose. Thanks Dean

Boatstones are considered by most to be atlatl weights and are generally thought to be Woodland artifacts. The vast majority are made of Banded slate with a very few made of hardstone. They (at least in Illinois) are cupped, or drilled....sometimes both. I would need better pics but your piece does not look to me to be an authentic Boat.
