I found this the other day in a shallow creekbed the other day while metal detecting a civil war site. Dont really know what it is or if it is an indian artifact you tell me.

Welcome Aboard CWH. Glad you're here. That looks to be a fairly porous material, kinda like sandstone. You didn't say - but I'm guessing it's not metal. When you're looking for Native American artifacts, especially those made from Chert or Flintstone, as some call it, you key on the characteristics of the surface of the material. NA's worked the chert which left marks on the surface. It's called knapping or chipping away surface material to shape the item into a point, blade or tool.
They look like indentations in the material. This is what we mean when we say it was "worked" by man and differentiates between what's natural shaping or manmade shaping.
