Surface find, March of this year in Lawrence County, Tennessee. It's 2.25 inches long, has a snapped base [I'm thinking] and not broke, and it's been thinned in the hafting area. Any ideas on what type this might be? Probably my best find in my 3 years of hunting. Found it in my usual search area first time out after the winter rains.

Eloras have a snapped base and I have one just like your piece . Same material like the same person made it .
also a pickwick in the 14th edition OStreet on page 549 from Al. looks like your piece minus the snapped base .

Thanks for all the suggestions, the elora might be the closest by pictures and they could have a snapped base...its that base that has me stumped. The 14th edition Overstreet has a snapped base section for eastern central but none shaped like this one as far as my newbie eyes can tell. What matters more, shape or knapping style? I'm really green when it comes down to knapping differences, but I'm learning...slowly lol.

Both matter shape and knapping style . Me not being an expert just learning all the time . Let’s hope A seasoned member jumps in . I do see so many variations on one type just by how it starts out and continually gets resharppened till the shape can change to me .

I wanted to see that . How thick it was because mine is very thick .
That particular lithic I think was the most prized in the area . Every darn chip was put to use . The smallest bird tips I have ever found that just sit on the top of my finger to a spall knocked down to what a dradal would look like . Probably a weird engraver . It’s strong as heck . Looked at it under a microscope and it’s almost like a quartzite like salami ( those won’t post ) thought it was a jasper or red Chert . Confused now . What do you believe your piece is made out of ?

Sorry Tam but I'm just as clueless to the material as I am the form, someday I hope to be able to dedicate more research time into this hobby of mine to be more knowledgeable.

It is not an Elora or a White Spring. It looks more like a Kirk of some kind to me. The flaking, flattened in cross section, shoulders shape and the snapped base lead me to think it may be a Kirk. Whether the authors of Overstreet include snapped base Kirks in their key or not does not preclude their existence. I had 36 Kirks in my former collection, all personal finds. Of those 16 had "snapped" bases. They are not broken or unfinished. They were made that way. All collectors don't share my opinion on this subject but because of what I saw I an convinced. Now having said that, of course, it may not be a Kirk. I would have to have it in hand to say with confidence. Just looks to me more like a Kirk than anything else that comes to mind plus the location in Lawrence Co., TN Your hunting area is less than 50 miles northeast of some of my old hunting grounds in Morgan Co. and Limestone Co., AL

If that is a statement of your wishes, then my response is: sometimes I wish it, too. But I made a good decision at the time. And now several years later I'm not very sorry that I did. It was sold intact to an excellent buyer to a person that some folks on the forum might recognize by name. It also included topographical site maps with my site numbers so there would be no doubt as to the provenance of those I identified by site once I got in the habit of marking each find, a habit I wish I had started early on but didn't due to my ignorance at the time.I had some excellent points and blades. Of course, it was those real "goodies" that enabled the sale of all of them. I kept back just a few to pass on to my son who as a child often accompanied me on hunts. Those are some of the ones I sometimes show here.

I really appreciate your input Joe being you hunted in the same general area, and believe you may be right...experience matters in my mind, thank you. I had dismissed the Kirk because of the angle on the bases in the pictures that I'm seeing. But I'm so green I don't know what characteristics to really look for. I have one with a broke ear that looks real close to the one in your sig pic that I found there also. Sorry to hear about your collection, hope all is well!!!
