  • More than a field rock, right?

Found in north central IL (LaSalle County) field. This just has too much going for it to think it's just a rock from a field: The groove all around it, the sharp end, the blunt end, the overall shape. I think all the marks on it are from a farmer's disc/plow hitting it over the years.

If it is more than a rock than any help as to what it is? Thanks.

Looks like a full groove axe. Beat up but nice.

I thought rock until I saw the last pic that’s the money shot. Seeing it’s from up state I can’t give a type but if it was found here I would think a possible Guilford type due to the crudeness of it. Maybe Greg will know.

Thanks! Any idea on age? (Forgot to mention my father-in-law found this years ago while farming.)

If it was an Antiquity. The ground incised grooves and such would display the same worn/aged Patina & smoothness as the rest of the Cobble stone.

I'd bet that the straight marks were caused by farm iron, mostly disk plow and turned/run over a lot...

Most grooved ax heads are Archaic period.

Some in this area are called Cobble Ax they found a rock with the right shape then altered it a bit too the needs. Idk if you have that type or not. Most aren’t the best looking ax heads. That one has definitely been run across a few times by all of the scratches

Looking at it closer at different angles it does appear to be an Axe form fashioned piece. Not familiar with much plowed up stuff. The Disc marks/grooves scraps etc appear to be all from same time frame and same machine/tractor/plow. It’s got a Cool Unique shape all its own.

I had to do the same thing Jack, first look I was all “he found a rock that’s been hit by a plow way too many times,” then I saw the money shot....and it was an “aha” moment.

Great asymmetrical ax , it is completely normal for a field find ax to have plow marks. It in no way detracts from your excellent find. Thanks for a look.

Yes I am. Only another disc golfer would have known! Been playing 40 years. Started when there were just object courses and no golf discs (folf/frolf). Wow, have things changed!
