  • Large Kentucky Hornstone Spall

I found this on the Whippoorwill Site yesterday. Is it a chopper? Can Hornstone be smoothed? Although it was found in a plowed field, the amount of mineralization makes me think, that it was not created via 2 plow strikes. It seems too even as well.

I'd say that piece got cracked that way naturally a long, long time ago. Probably when it eroded out and made it's way down a stream bed or through freezing and thawing after some natural process managed to crack it. Nice big natural spall though, a Clovis knapper would have jumped up and down with joy if they had found it.

That makes sense. Mother Nature creates some interesting stuff.
