This is only my second post of finds. I hit both my spots yesterday and I found this. I think it is a turtle shell. One edge has been worked and it is pretty sharp. Not a great piece as far as craftsmanship but unique. Has anyone found anything similar? The site is downstream from a known burial site in NE dated around 1000..

from what i can tell in the pics its quartz between layers of some sort of bedrock

here in Mn we have what we call "fat rock quartz",its found in river beds between layers of slate bedrock
the ancient people used it frequently here because it was one of the better materials available to them as we dont have much for good lithic material

Hello, Sneaky. I’m an old(ish) newbie. Lived in Duluth on USAF base when young. Mr. Moeller, one of my teachers, introduced me to rocks. Still remember him and Duluth well!

Just natural in my opinion show it to a geologist he could probably tell you what it is. One side does the porous white looks like lime stone to me. I am not sure about the black the black ? In between may be quartz or could be some other lithic. A cool rock I would have brought it home too. I gotta ask how close to the burial area are you looking? Collecting off of known burial sites is not only illegal but it is immoral as well.

It is a couple miles upstream. No one is allowed on property, which is cool. I walk the creek gravel bars below. I would never dig even if I had access. Appreciate your feedback

Know enough about rocks to say “I concur” with Sneaky (instead of “I think maybe could be....” as I do with arrowheads). Layered rocks one of my favorites; I call them “Tiramisu”.

Thanks guys. I agree the bottom layers are rock, but it is the top that perplexes me. Oh well. I have a pretty cool knife I didn’t have last week. Still haven’t found an intact arrowhead

It is a rather interesting rock specimen, natural but interesting. I suggest taking photo's in natural sunlight, so the blur is gone, and the colors are more clear.
