  • Is this a tool?

A friend of mine found this stone today. He’s a plumber and it was in the backfill dirt in the slab they were roughing in, so I don’t know where the dirt came from. Somewhere here in southeast Georgia. The pictures don’t show it completely, but there is a depression on each side of the stone. Any ideas?

It is an artifact. Different theories on those. The one I favor is use as an anvil stone in bipolar percussion. They turn up a lot around my area mostly in creeks where small quartz cobbles were being split up to make tools out of. Search "pitted hammer stones" or "anvil stones" and see what you think.

After looking online, I can say it is definitely a pitted hammer stone. Thank you for the info!
