  • More than a rock?

North central IL - LaSalle County

I've been artifact hunting for about 5 yrs. The first 3 yrs I focused on looking for points and I have been successful doing that. I only a hunt couple small fields that are part of my in-laws property. I find chert debitage all over the place. I've picked up thousands of pieces of chert in 5 yrs.

In the past 2 yrs, based on people's postings here on this forum, I also started to pick up rocks that I found amidst all the chert I pick up (pic 1).

Today, I started to look at those rocks. After looking at a few, I found a smooth, disc-shaped rock with similar wear in the center of both sides. There are obvious plow marks but the wear in the middle of each side makes me think this could be an artifact (pics 2, 3 and 4).

Is this more than a rock? If it is an articact, then any thoughts and opiniins on that? Thanks in advance.

Definite artifact. I call them camp stones. These are natural stones used to process nuts and or used as hammer stones . Yours has wear patterns all around. I like finding these as much as most chipped tools.

Nice artifact. Possible there something else in that pile. The dished out stone in the middle might be something.

I love those smooth oval-shaped rocks with distinctive divot, and immediately say to it: you a cupstone? you an anvil? Whatever you are, you had a job!

Good eye! I did not notice the "wear patterns all around" that you mentioned. Here's a couple pics of what you noted.

Here is the dished-out stone you spotted. Good eye. In the past it had caught my eye too but I thought, "just a rock". Agree?

Yes, I am a disc golfer. Many courses offer opportunities to do some artifact hunting. I know a lot of "rock hound" disc golfers! (For those wondering, "hyzer" is a disc golf term.)

Nice! Love some DG. My local course down here in FL is an old limestone quarry.

utilized flake - Glad to hear you've been hukking discs for awhile. I am an old timer - been throwing plastic since the Frisbee came out in the 1960s and disc golfing since the 70's, even before today's disc golf basket was invented in 1977. "Artifacting" and disc golfing give me great pleasure!
