  • Odd Black Rock

So my friend is digging arrowheads in an archaic site. She finds this odd black rock and gives it to me. It has iron mineralization on it like the artifacts from the site. For some reason I decide to look at it with a light and get a shock!

I dint even know what to think. East tx. Click image for larger version

I don't know too much about tektites, but they are found in East Texas.

I thought the same. I sent pics to Briman. He says no known tektites that color. It is curved exactly like a tektite though. The actual color is green. Can't get a photo that doesn't make it look blue.

I guess it could be slag glass but the mineralization on it makes me think natives brought it to camp thousands of years ago.

Yup, Briman was going to be the guy I suggested you contact.

Odd piece, especially if dug on an archaic site. (River or plowed field, easy to call it slag glass.)

Cool. You know when they found an odd rock or cool fossil they kept it too. They were just as curious about their surroundings as us, if not more. Lots of cool and different rocks are found on camps.

      A cool find.

The one surface appears to match a tectite that I own.

But mine is not translucent much past its edge.

The bog iron slags up here are more translucent but, don't normally have impact streaking lines.

The surface is perfect match to a tektite . It's even curved like many tektites get on re-entry. The issue is the color? Supposedly no North American tektites that color.

Maybe it's glass slag but how it got buried in that site is a mystery... also the amount of mineralization on it makes me think it is many thousands of years old.

It might be worth buying a cheap Bediasite advertised as translucent for comparison.

If not a match, at least it would be a Texas souvenir via the Chesapeake.
    Working...
