  • Fat Little Gary Type?

When I first saw this under the water I was excited, thinking that I had found my first point in over year. I have been finding many tools, but points seem to be elusive. But, when I picked it up, a little disappointment set in. It looked to thick to be a point, flaking is hard to see of there is any, but there might be signs of it from the ridge in the middle of the "stem", so I dismissed it as a rock that looks like a point. But I took it anyway to add to my growing set of natural pieces that look like points I am building to help identify what is not a point.

I continued to look at it though, and now I am not sure. A Gary was found in this same spot about a year ago, so that is another reason why I am wondering. Could this have been an attempt to make a little Gary, but was abandoned because the material was too thick? Or is there a possibility that it, for some reason, was intended to be thick? The bottom is completely smooth.

Hump Back Scraper that happens to look like a projectile... imo

I agree with Jon, I don’t believe it is a projectile point. That said there’s no mistaking it’s been worked all the way around and I think scraper is a solid call. Compared to some other single use or expediently crafted flake tools that one has quite a bit of modification, I would call it a finished tool in good condition

I was not expecting a scraper. Thank you all.

There is some humor in this. I have been lightly complaining about not having found a point in a little over a year, and instead finding multitudes of scrapers (thumbnail, thumb, end, etc.). Now, when I finally found something that seemed to me to be a possible point... what is it actually? Not preform, not a natural rock that looks like a point.

          No. Its another scraper.

Its a cool scraper, though, and I have to say that it is now one of my favorites. In truth, I love tools, and if all I ever find from here on out are scrapers and spokeshaves, I'd still be happy.
