  • Ancient American Cultural Factoids

I think a category on interesting "cultural factoids" about the ancient Americans who provided us with these awesome artifacts, and thus our beloved hobby, would be a great tribute to them.
For example, river cobble stones are frequently found in farmer fields where ancient campgrounds were located in thevwillamette Valley of Oregon.  I did not know why, until I read about the Calapooyan Indians who used these cobble stones to line fire pits to make "ovens" to bake camas roots.  They would build a fire, put roots on coals, then cover with soil and bake roots for several days.  Baked camas roots were a staple food, ground up and made into cakes.  Camas roots are now, i believe, rare in Willamette Valley, Oregon.
    Thanks!
