    Smithsonian Resources:
National Museum of the American Indian
    National Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian Institution – National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) collection can be searched here:
The NMAI fosters a richer shared human experience through a more informed understanding of Native peoples.

The complete collection is not yet available online, but comprehensive reports, with images, of specific object collections may be obtained by contacting NMAIcollections@si.edu

They ask that you provide as much information as possible about the specific collection in which you are interested, and include complete contact information, including name, institutional affiliation (if applicable), address, phone, and email address.

The NMAI became part of the Smithsonian Institution in 1989. The extensive Native American collections associated with the Smithsonian before 1989 are likely at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The two collections have not been merged.

You can search the NMNH anthropology collections here:

Note that the Smithsonian will not authenticate, value or otherwise appraise artifacts (as a matter of policy) and do not welcome objects being sent or brought to the museum – except by prior arrangement.

You contact them on NMAIcollections@si.edu for informal identifications, providing as much information as possible about the object (where found, history, description, dimensions, sharp images, etc).
I keep six honest serving-men (they taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.
