  • Buffalo River chert, Tennessee

    Can be found in several areas of Tennessee and in particular the lower ends of the Tennessee River, Found in gravel bars. Part of the Fort Payne formation.
    Works nice raw but much easier if heat treated and once heat treated has red hues with circular rings. Ranges from glassy to chalky to waxy.
    Some of the darker varieties are are more of a Fort Payne looking material while the real tan
    (raw) is the classic material that changes color nicely when heated.
