    Montezuma castle in Arizona
    Posted by [SDhunter]

I found this an interesting site north of Phoenix. This was settled by the Sinaqua Indians, and they were thought to live here from about 1100 AD to 1400 AD. No one knows for sure why they departed this region, and where they may have gone, but it is thought they may have joined the Hopi to the northwest. This particular dwelling housed a family of around 40-50 people. The first one was built right in the side of a cliff, and the second one was built at ground level about 40 yards away. This was a small cliff right next to a creek. This small area was a nice oasis in the desert. You can see why they settled here. Montezuma was never here, but early people thought it belonged to him, and the name stuck.

I included some photos of the artifacts found here. They are behind glass, so hard to photograph, but you can get some idea of their style. I found the way they hafted axes or picks interesting. Different than I've seen before.

Also, notice the two rocks with holes in the center. The information at the visitor center, said that the Sinaqua people raised Macaws. These stones were used as the front of the macaw pens, for an entrance. They placed a rock in the hole to plug it up. The top of the pens were kind of a wood lattice. So, that's the answer to the mystery. At least, what I was told.
