  • Possible Indian camp but where to start looking for artifacts ?

I have the opportunity to hunt a possible indian camp. On a bluff above where two rivers and a creek join. Not sure where to start looking. Would old fire ring areas be visible? Any advice would be appreciated.

Test pits! Every so many feet. Looking for chips/artifacts/soil profile changes/burn spots. I'd check the creek/river jnx first. Sorry if you are in a rocky spot! sounds exciting. There is little reason to not think there would be a camp in that kind of location.

Well hopefully the soil on your bluff is sandy loam and not clay. Clay is a bear to dig. You mentions fire rings are there any visible?

Have not had a good chance to scout area. covered in cedar trees, with some small clearings. Hoping I will see some sign of fire rings or flint chips. going to survey it better tomorrow

Welcome. I guess I would head down to the river and start there. That may be easier than a lot of digging. Any bare ground could be good

Thanks for the help! Located old camp area by middens. No points yet but lots of flint flakes and one broken tool. Hopefully some better finds to come.

Not much to show for all my digging yet but these 3 and a lot of flakes. Definitely burnt rock middens. In the right area for sure.
