Hillside areas near current and ancient streams, sea shores and lakes are always a good bet.

Good question but you probably won’t find anyone giving you a good spot especially in open forum. Most of us have our own spots and don’t want to share. Takes a while to learn how and where to find them. Welcome to the forum

Look for agricultural fields near sources of fresh water. Find the landowner and farmer(not always the same person), and ask permission. Look after heavy rains only, not bone dry fields. Corn fields are best, since, with farmer's permission, you can look until the corn is too high or thick to see the ground. Probably too late in the growing season to do that now. Look on estuary shorelines, where the rocks are about the size of your average point. Where streams enter such estuary shorelines are usually pretty good.

But, as has been said, you're on your own. Few people will just turn you onto their sites. It takes research, common sense(where would you camp or settle down?), and legwork. In this hobby, one pulls oneself up by the bootstraps. You might see if there is a Long Island chapter of the New York Archaeological Society, and you might meet surface hunters kindly disposed to a newcomer.

This page has actual archaelogical site locations on Long Island , do not dig or collect on state or federal lands , but seek permission to private lands near the places mentioned here ... http://www.garviespointmuseum.com/in...ong-island.php
