Rock shelter

I got permission to dig a big rock shelter that has a holmony hole under it can anyone give me thoughts on we’re would be a good start on digging ?or any suggestions thanks.and it is legal to dig on private property.

Having never had the opportunity my experience is very limited.....but I have heard people say the drip line (where rain would drip in front of shelter) and outside beyond it as opposed to inside shelter......no one wants to step on lithic shards cutting their feet in their living room
