what are some good things to look for and identify other than rock jams when walking creeks.

Erosion. Creeks will wander a valley and cut down into the valley floor over the years. The creek you are walking in today might have been 50' higher when the NA hunted and camped nearby. I have had the best luck at spots in a creek bed located close to a flat plateau where there may have been a village or camp. Good luck!

Sand bars are surely a good place, especially on a bend downstream from an eroding  bluff.
