  • Greetings from SE Connecticut - Home of the Pequot Indians

Maybe it's a mid-life crisis or the awareness of imminent demise one feels upon turning 50, but I am suddenly interested in the local pre-history of my hometown, Ledyard CT... home of the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation and Foxwoods Casino. Once again living in my childhood home, a 1750 colonial on many, many acres of untouched and protected farmland that sits in the Pequot tribe's former territory, I have been exploring the woods I played in as a kid. Never had before had I noticed the odd piles of stones stacked atop boulders, or the enclosures formed of ringed boulders, or huge glacial erratics precariously perched at the edge of bedrock slabs, or the oddly meandering stone walls that could never have corralled the dumbest of bovine critters. I've done some homework and now know that the ancients were right here... at my home. I have always been a fan of rocks and geology but haven't given artifacts much thought since finding an arrowhead on Block Island, RI when I was a kid. It has long since been misplaced but I can picture it clearly in my mind... an online search reveals it was a Levanna point. Anyhow... I'm excited to get out and see what I can find and learn about the pre-history of the CT/RI/MA region!

Welcome. If any of your property is cultivated, check it out after heavy rains. Lots of fields in far eastern Ct., along the Quinnibaug from south to north. With permission, should be lots of potential sites to walk and check. Good luck....

Thanks guys! I hit up a farmer a couple miles away and have an open invite to search all of his fields at any time. Spent 3 hours in the cold wind staring at glacial till and corn stubble. Had no idea corn grew in gravel. Two quarter sized flaky bits of bright white quartz gave hope... if only for a second or two. Numero uno is still out there somewhere.

Welcome Woody sometimes it takes time to find the right spot. Keep looking in that field or take a experienced person like Red with you one day so they can help you find them. You can always split the finds at the end of the day. I'm in Georgia so it won't be me. Good luck

The farm has a pond at the end of the corn field I checked previously that may have been a gravel pit. There are some weed covered piles of soil nearby that might have been dredged from the pond. On the other hand they could be soil plowed off the rocky corn field. Next time out I'll check them out... maybe strip off some weeds so rain can go to work on the soil.

Welcome to arrowheads.com Woody. I grew up in Shelton and hunted the Housy from Milford and Stratford on the coast all the way to Kent on the NY border. Sounds like you are on some good hunting grounds. Best of luck in the hunt.
