  • Civil war English ale bottles from my house

The house I live in was built before the Civil War by my Great Great Grandfather that fought in the war and was captured in the battle of Mechanicsburg and latter died at Camp Morton Indiana This was about the time of the siege of Vicksburg anyway this house was commandeered by the Yankee's and this was the time that Gen. Sherman was on his way to Atlanta with his kill all live stock and burn everything else. But the story goes here that a young lady that lived here had begged that the house not be burned and it still stand today. These bottles are what's left of hundreds of them, they use to line the walk ways. The old smoke house where all this was found has fallen in on its self and one day I will excavate it

I have always called the crockery ones like that ginger beer bottles. That black glass one is nice. It looks like a three piece mold.

Hundreds of thousands of these ceramic bottles were exported to the USA filled with ale, not ginger beer. "Ginger beer" is a collector nickname which probably started (in the NE) because these ale bottles had a secondary use in bottling home-made ginger beer.

Variants of this bottle were made from 1869 to 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Thanks Deb did you read the entire thread on Tnet? There seems to be some debate to this. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/bo...uestion-2.html
