  • Silver 1993 -S Quarter in change

I look at my coin change and even look at numbers and things on bills. This one just jumped out at me in my hand...like clean old silver. I only looked it up to see if it was silver like the pre '64 quarters and it is. No metal/copper/zinc band sandwich on the side. I don't know why they made then in San Francisco in '93 out of silver....guessing a special run for collectors. This one has seen plent Click image for larger version

Now that's weird. I have never seen one like that.

That is very interesting .It must be a limited run for some occasion. An off the wall idea...maybe a jeweler or artist cast one in silver as a gift, it was accidentally put into circulation...and ended up in your hands.

You can make a wax mold pretty easily of a coin, then cast it like they do with jewelry.

Just looked into that date. Didn't see any reason for the silver content. 90% silver, 10% copper. I think that's the same as the last 1964 ones. But there are others out there with your coins date and mint mark on coin collecting sites. Listed at a few bucks each.

it is a coin from a proof set. They make proof sets every year . https://www.thepatrioticmint.com/201...SABEgJ-K_D_BwE someone probably broke up a set. I bought some sets the year my Grandson was born so he has them when he turns 18.

you can buy the sets direct from the mint. They are pricey though. https://catalog.usmint.gov/united-st...520set&start=1

Some kid took it out of their grand parents proof set to buy ice cream, see stuff like that occasionally when looking threw my change.

Hoss, Willjo that's it. I feel a memory-connection a comin' on to this then because back in about 1962 or so I raided my Dad's drawer for a silver 50 cent, maybe dollar coin (from his Dad..)...and went to the fair and took a ride and likely bought ice cream. Lucky Carny worker, Bad Boy! Much later did tell Pop about the same time I apologized to Mom for all the grief I must have caused growing up! He had no idea and she loved it. Everyone should get a chance to do that you little chitz woi lol.
