Hi Benji. Did you find this in a farm field? Without me handling it I can't tell if it is hand forged or not. If you know what to look for in a forged tool, you could get a better age range. We have quite a large old tool collection in my museum. when I get back there I will do some bookwork on this one and give you what I find. Kim

I know about ball peen hammers Ben, I’ve been using them near all my life. Are you sure the handle is not inserted and welded at the top ? I’ve never seen one with a metal handle unless someone got tired of replacing handles. They last a lifetime or more. They are made to hit metal surfaces without chipping but I recommend using protective eye ware anyway. Never use a claw hammer on any metal surface , other than a nail. The claw hammer can chip back and put a eye out. My dad lost a eye using two claw hammers to uncrate a wood cargo box but back then there were hardly any EHS safety measures.. I’ve often used then to make a gasket, against a metal surface. Also in a bearing I take two ball peen hammers to ping a screw in bearing, so it can’t slip and unscrew . Also used in rounding off metal or beating off slag on a cast iron cast before machining. In high school I worked half a day as a machinist under a die maker. He knew everything but the guy never took a bath. He’d change his nasty shirts and hang them up to air out. Why is this significant ? I had to pay attention while he taught me bc he stunk so bad !

The handle has been inserted it appears. Really a pic of the top of the hammer head would tell more. It’s old, very old hammer. A old man that taught me many things, born in 1905 had one that he had put a steel handle into the head.
