    Was there any civil war battles around there .
    He said looks like a rail road spike . We have a few and that they blasted those out of canons if they ran out of balls . They would load with whatever they had .

            Powdery stuff rust, silly! Red Ochre is clay pigment which gets red color from hydrated iron oxide (rust); your spike appears the color of red ochre not because coated in clay, but because it rusted and is coated in hydrated iron oxide.
            (I know so very little in this forum, so must show-off when do know trivial tidbit !)

            Check out the powars site Sunshine Wyo. It is red ochre dust. It covers everything, even the rust. Scottsbluff star herald has first story when goog it.

                  Look at the shade of the other teeth and the tool bar. That dark color is what rust looks like here.
                  The powdery stuff on spike is red ochre.
