Been into RC trucks ever since I was a kid and was out of the hobby for a few years. Been eyeballin the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 VXL for a couple of years now and finally treated myself to one. Brushless motor, Lipo battery, waterproof electronics. 40 mph out of the box, capable of over 60 with a bigger battery and the right gearing. Too much fun.

Ray my son and I were just discussing that the other night. There's a quad rotor helicopter out there that has two cameras and homing abilities also. Can fly predetermined routes and return with no input if desired.
Hoss, that's a Traxxas Slash 4x4 Short Course Truck and actually shares most of the same parts as my truck. What a great prize to win. I had a couple of those and we used to race them quite a bit. Quite tough but two upgrades I always recommend is aluminum shock caps to replace the stock plastic caps and the motor mount upgrade (King Headz) with larger bearing. About $50 total but well worth it. Yes, they are addicting and a great hobby for when the creeks are all dried up, like here. RC has come a long way. Love the 2.4 GHz radios, no more crystals or worrying if anyone is on your same channel. If you ever have any questions about your truck, hit me up.

Thanks man I appreciate the advice. I am going to get a new body too this one is wearing through above the tires. I run it around my back yard that is why the clump of grass is in there.

Only complaints I heard on stampede 4x4 are those universal shafts but other than that neat truck.

Rick I want to upgrade my batteries any suggestions this thing has a stock Traxxas 8.4 powercell. I see Josh mentioned 2.2 Lipo I was reading if mishandled they can explode. I don't mind trying them but can I use a stock charger on them? How do you feel about 20 as opposed to 30s when choosing a battery.
This truck is fast now but I think it can go faster.

Very nice I was looking just last week at them. Ray mentioned one with a camera for point looking. Thanks for the post.

Lipos are great for extended run time and they provide more "punch". Lipos are also lighter. They do require a special charger and if mis-handled can cause a very hard to put out fire.
Lipo safety, always use a lipo rated charger on the correct setting and charge and store Lipos in a Lipo bag (fire resistant) or something that could contain a fire. Google lipo fire, you'll see.
To break down the numbers on a lipo pack, here's an example of mine. 2S 25C 5000mAh.
2S is 2 cell (3.7 volts per cell) so 7.4 volts
25C is basically how much current it can flow at any given time (more powerful motor requires higher C).
5000mAh is the total capacity of the pack (higher mAh equals longer run time).
By the way, 2S, 25 or 30C, 5000 to 8000mAh would be a perfect pack for your Slash.
Lipos come in hard and soft pack. Hard packs are more durable and actually required at sanctioned races. My truck came with a soft pack which is fine but if you get in a really hard crash, be careful and check that pack for damage.
Very Important,
Make sure the Low Voltage Cutoff is activated on your speed control, can't let lipos run dead, it will kill them. Traxxas website shows how to make sure it's on.
Don't run the entire pack through your truck without taking a break and letting it cool for a few minutes. I use a non-contact temp gun to monitor temps. Don't let motor get over 150 degrees or speed control get over 120 or so.
You may have noticed that a 2S lipo is only 7.4v and your current pack is 8.4v. Yes your pack puts out more voltage initially but that drops off pretty quickly. The higher current flow and lighter weight of the lipo makes up for that and the voltage of the lipo pack stays consistent. You'll hardly notice a decrease in speed over the entire cycle of the battery.
Once you go lipo, you'll never go back...

I used to have several traxxas's, the nitro hawk, first version with .12, that's actually before they went with the .15. Traded it for a mess of losi and other traxxas's but they are all gone also as that was about 1995 when i was still racing an og rc10  , was hard keeping up with the newer ones. :dunno: I like bashing mostly now though. Various photo's of the mf :dunno: . Kind of "outgrowing" rc, but they are cool! Especially like the rock crawlers and the vintage re-release's.
And hey Rick, if you know anyone that want's a clear unpunched body rattlecanned, cut and mounted i can do it cheap  . Here's a bf "throwback" i did for the mf.
