Scary thoughts and hot rocks.

This was staring up at me from the murk of the Gorge. And the scary thing is I think I can remember buy one similar to this for my son back in 89.

I changed locations today and boy did I pick a hard spot to try and wade in. The sucking muck was at least afoot deep with every step so I didn't last long on the water.
However I did manage to pull a few things out.

Sadly the Whyte & Mackay Glasgow bottle is broken.

The lead is building up again. The bottle is to show size.

The brass is ever present as you would expect.

And once in a while I get a surprise in the scoop.Like this magnifier.

Or this little tusker.

But the real surprise today was 2 rocks. The larger one set off the pinpointer while it was in the sifter. Right where the middle of the quartz X is and the smaller one well that is a different story.
The Excal went nuts over it and so did the pinpointer. Can home and ran it by the CTX and got a solid 12/40 with a sweet high tone.

It has been far to long since I did a land hunt so the other night I just had to dig a few holes. There are very few green places left with this drought we are having but I did manage to find some and pulled these.

  Not a lot but I will take them.

Hey Bruce, What are the hot rocks? I found some magnetite while swinging the dectector on my land.

Ron here is a simplified explanation of hot rocks.
"Hot Rocks is a term that applies to terrestrial minerals that register (hot) on a metal detector or are 'attracted' to a test magnet or may visually appear metallic or meteoritic."
Meteor hunters will search an area with a detector and when they get a hit they use a magnet usually on the end of a pick to find it.
In and around mining areas many of these hot rocks will be coke from the furnaces and they are a nightmare to detectorists.
Neither of the ones I showed are magnetic so there is no iron content in them. The larger one may have a tiny speck of gold hidden in the quartz but the other one is silver ore. How either one got to where I found them is anyone's guess. :dunno:

Tim unfortunately the glass portion was not salvageable 

But you are right it is a cool find.
The glass was also badly damaged in this one.
It is a small pocket magnifier.
