Last week I received a PM from The tin man aka Ronald.
Asking if I could in any way help him with cleaning 2 items that he had found.
So of course the answer was yes I will give it a try.
The first item he had tried cleaning was this old iron padlock. What I did was to put it in reverse electrolysis for the better part of the day and then tumble it for 24 hours.
The last 3 hours had a touch of vinegar in the mix to cut through the last of the rust.
His second item was a military badge. This one took 1 1/2 hours of reverse electrolysis and 1 1/2 hours in the tumbler.
No vinegar this time though.
I didn't want to destroy the aged look of a dug item.
The goal with this one was just to bring out the highlights.
The last cleaning project was one of my own. If you remember this find. And thanks to Tim I now know that it is older than I first realized.
"The Fairalls emigrated to Orillia, ON, in 1881, where Henry established Fairall’s Brewery. Coming to Victoria in 1888, he founded the E&N Brewery south of Esquimalt Rd in Lime Bay.
From 1890-93 he ran it with Alfred N. Barry. "
This one required 24 hours in reverse electrolysis to loosen over 100 years of Gorge crud and then in the tumbler over night.
