  • Cleaner and safer.

That is the best I can say about the last two days of hunting.
A whole lot cleaner. Click image for larger version

Lots of neat stuff! How long do you usually go out for?

It really depends on the day and time of year. Fall and winter I get out for 2-4 hours a day and spring and summer I try for 5-6 hours a day.
I normally get out at least 6 days a week weather dependent.

Let me ask, if you were destitute and you only had your metal detector, could you survive on your finds? You should try it for a year and then write a book about your experience. You will be on Oprah and sell alot of copies!

Rob I had to take some time to think out a proper reply to your question. I guess the first response would be to say no. If I were truly destitute getting around from site to site and trying to live on what I found would be impossible. However I can and do manage to offset most if not all of the daily costs like batteries, gloves, gas for the car etc with the modern coins that I find. Recycling of the brass, copper and lead that I find brings in another 3-4 hundred dollars each year as well. If I were to sell the scrap gold and silver I find I guess that you could add a couple of thousand to the yearly total, but so far I have not sold any of that.
Metal detecting is not a way to get rich by any means but it is one of the only hobbies that can pay for itself and still allow your to keep some of the interesting and possibly valuable things that are out there to be found.

I've been impressed with the amount of coins you find. Your are probably right, you could not live off the small amount of coins you fin, especially after you pay income taxes.
