  • Puff the magic dragon.

Life has been somewhat stressful the last few months.
And what better way to forget everything than to get out side in the fresh air.
Doing nothing but listening to all of the beeps, bleeps, burps and farts from a metal detector.
From the first two days of this post it was primarily just clad hunting.
Day one I hit two different sports fields.

Fortunately coins is not all that I found though.
Both of those fields had just been mowed the day before.
And all of these nails were sitting up on top of the grass.

The next day I hit another two different parks.
The pipe tamper is only steel but it is kinda a cool find none the less.
I am not sure about the numbered band.
    Pigeon maybe?????
The Meccano dinky toy was decidedly the best find of the day for me.

And here is the scrap gather up over those two days.

As many of you know I am getting my house ready to put on the market.
That means that I have been selling a few things to make it more presentable.
One of those things was this.

It was found a couple of years ago and no one ever reported it lost so what the hey $150 in my pocket.
Another thing that I had to get rid of was the last 6 months worth of scrap metal I have been saving up.
Add to that I did my first bank run of the year for my clad.
And voila my plane ticket to Toronto is paid for and I have spending money to boot.

Now my place just seemed empty without any scrap metal kicking around.
And there was only one way to fix that.
Three different trips to my favorite saltchuck solved the problem.
The first 2 were solo trips and on the third trip I had Mike as my wing man.

The Chevy and Mack hubcaps were cool but this new auto company took the cake for me.
How many of you have ever seen a tudebaker.

Hunting the mudflats along the Gorge are fun because there is almost always something interesting coming out of the mud.
Day one along the gorge it was these.

We will never know what the big copper coin was because it almost totally disappeared when I put it through reverse electrolysis.
However the lighter came out of the same process with flying colours.

Coin shooting is something that you don't do on the Gorge.
    Saltwater destroys coins.

    Even silver ones.
That is a 1912 dime by the way.

Day 2 on the mudflats was an homage to the military for me.
As you have seen in my previous posts sometimes the stuff comes out totally encased in crud.
Sometime I bring the stuff home to break apart.
And other times when my pouch is getting full I will try and crack them open on site by bashing them with rocks.
That is what I did for this item.
And I am glad that I stopped when I saw this.

The only thing in this picture that does not have a military bent to it is the Thorpe's wooden cork.
Although I bet a few soldiers enjoyed a drink or tow from the bottle.
The spoon depicts lord Kitchener. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herber...Earl_Kitchener
That item I was smashing with rocks is a pin and not a hat badge but it is from the same era. http://www.britishmilitarybadges.co....p-badge-8.html
It came out of the same hole as the US general service button.
and within 3 feet of the Canadian general list hat badge.

As stated earlier the third day I had Mike riding shotgun.
Actually to be truthful he drove and I rode shotgun.
Mike was the winner this day as he made two great finds.

his first find was a gorgeous one piece brass button.

And then he pulled this honking big size 12 and a half custom silver ring.

This is where I would normally cal it quits.
However this time I thought that it might be nice to gather up some of the more interesting scrap and show you what I liked in that pile.
The Rodd Brothers plaque is not as old as I had thought. http://www.nauticapedia.ca/Articles/..._Rodd_Bros.php
However everything here caught my eye.

Thank you. Finding glass on these mudflats is easy. It is strewn everywhere.
Sadly 99.9% of it is busted all to hell.

Bruce, Your posts are always an enjoyable read. Thanks for sharing the cool finds with us. Your mystery piece looks like an old mason jar lid on the underside. Perhaps a fancy store jar lid. The crops are up here in Ohio so I'm back to scrounging in the creeks. Two marbles and a small brown bottle is all I had to show from yesterday. Glad your hunts are more productive.

I had not considered a display lid Tim 🤔🤔🤔 you might be right 👌
Using a detector is kinda like cheating, I would be lost if I had to rely on sight alone.
Hopefully your next hunts are more productive. Although there is nothing wrong with marbles and bottles, I like finding both of those things. 👍👍👍

You are most welcome my friend.
As I am writing this I was staring at your tag line. "Look to the ground for it holds the past!"
In my case (detecting in parks) it would read.
Look to the ground for that is where the doggy logs are.!!!!!! :-) :-)
