I don't have the button with me at this moment Frank, otherwise I could try to narrow down the exact match. With that said it is quite likely a US Navy button dating from 1850 to 1860

Your right there Bruce. Sometimes I spend hours in the field to just get a couple of brokes...but as you said If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be there...that piece with the war eagle on the anchor is a great design...nice digs Canuck!!!Last edited by BabaORiley; 12-10-2018, 05:55 PM.

Please bare with me as I am coming close to the end of these catch up posts.
When this popped up I thought that I had my first fatty indian head penny.
However this side was a pleasant surprise as it turned out to be my first flying eagle penny.
The real bonus is that the date is still readable. 1857
I love those Flying Eagle cents but they are rare finds where I hunt. I have only found four over the many years I have hunted, one which I gave to a hunting partner since he had never found one and it was his site we were hunting.

Here is another button.
The back mark looked all Greek to me until I realized the top mark was "extra"
Most likely European and possibly military.
This hunt had it all for me.
Silver and gold and military.
The ring is a 22K spinner.
And the military hat badge turned out great considering how corroded it was at first.

My pick for the winner here is the button.
It turned out better than expected.
Considering what it looked like at first.
11KBP ( really do wish that I was better at remembering members names)
Is so right about the flimsiness of the US military two piece buttons.
This find would be outstanding if not for the front of it.
