Thanks Red. That hat badge was definitely the best find of that hunt.

I don't have the button with me at this moment Frank, otherwise I could try to narrow down the exact match. With that said it is quite likely a US Navy button dating from 1850 to 1860

Your right there Bruce. Sometimes I spend hours in the field to just get a couple of brokes...but as you said If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be there...that piece with the war eagle on the anchor is a great design...nice digs Canuck!!!

Nothing is time consuming if you enjoy it Johnny.
    Not even pounding rocks.

I also enjoy giving things to people who are truly interested in an item as opposed to those who only care what the value of something is.

Please bare with me as I am coming close to the end of these catch up posts.

When this popped up I thought that I had my first fatty indian head penny.
However this side was a pleasant surprise as it turned out to be my first flying eagle penny.
The real bonus is that the date is still readable. 1857
    All great finds Bruce.
I love those Flying Eagle cents but they are rare finds where I hunt. I have only found four over the many years I have hunted, one which I gave to a hunting partner since he had never found one and it was his site we were hunting.

The back mark looked all Greek to me until I realized the top mark was "extra"

Most likely European and possibly military.

And the military hat badge turned out great considering how corroded it was at first.

11KBP ( really do wish that I was better at remembering members names)
Is so right about the flimsiness of the US military two piece buttons.
This find would be outstanding if not for the front of it.
