  • They were in my yard!?

I am stoked about this find! It is a Civil War bayonet scabbard tip finale, that I dug up in my front yard! After finding about $7 in clad, and three wheat pennies over a three week period, I thought there was nothing left to find. However, I started digging "iffy" signals, and was rewarded with this!

Here is a pic of what it belonged to. Note the end of the bayonet near the tip.

The white thing, shows the location of an Iron Furnace was, during the war. The 54th Virginia, and the 117th Ohio camped there. This finale must have come from one of the pickets stationed as a lookout.

I just can't believe that I spent all this time researching a place, only to be standing on a relic for years! That other piece is there somewhere, and by golly I'll find it!

The house I live in was built in the 30's. The pickets had no other reason to be there, except for the fact that it is a large hill.

          Thank you!

        That’s cool!

I’d imagine with the way those camps smelled, if you could get away to a hill with fresh air it would be a significant improvement. (Unless they were actively fighting.)

If you strolled away for a break during active battles, they might just shoot you when you return for cowardice in battle...
