Dug this near the base of an old native settlement circa 1700s. Any insights ? A pendant?

Yes it's metal.

It looks like your find is rusty iron. Age will be determined by the area environment. In a dry desert like environment it will take decades to grow that much rust. Whereas if it came from a coastal environment it takes far less time to corrode to the state it is in.
