well since i didnt have to work today because of the weather. i decided i would do a little flint knapping.

i picked up this piece of purple fiber optic glass at the knap in last month at the hairy mosquito in milaca mn. decided to make a little knife blade from it. turned out fairly well.

im going to use some zebra wood for the handle.

thank you, but i havent actually put an edge to it as of yet
its going to be a display piece so it may not get a proper edge
but we will see what kind of mood im in when o go to finish it up

Absolutely love that translucent glass and pairing it with that Zebra wood for a handle will be awesome. Please don't forget to post a picture of the finished product Sneaky.

thanks Chuck. i most certainly will post a pic or two of it once it finished.
might take awhile to get it finished up. i will get the handle on it tomorrow since i dont have to work again(damn snow storm)
but that is one very thirsty wood and is going to take many many coats of tung oil. the wood is very porous. so im guessing its probably going to take about 15 coats if not more.

Hey Tim, Real nice work on the knife blade. Can you tell me where that wood grows? I have some similar wood from South Africa.

well here it is all finished up

18 cotes of tung oil,and you can still some of the pores in the wood.

after every 5 cotes i would sand with 600 grit, and then rub it with xxxx steel wool.then apply cote after cote until 5 more were applied and repeat(i let every coat dry for at least 2 hours before applying the next)
got a bit tired of working on this one(adhd was kicking in i think lol )
got most of the pores in the wood covered,i think what is left just adds a bit of character.

im not going to edge it as it is strictly for display purposes(and im just tired of working on this one)

        thank you.

i dont really care for working most glass, this and opalized glass are the true exceptions.

Woodworking can be just as finicky as knapping if you are adhd Tim.
Bravo for sticking with it through to the end.
