  • My first ground axe head!!!

After viewing Ron's ground slate point, and seeing Jay's crosshatched point, I decided to be a copy cat. (Sorry!) We have a few outcroppings of good quality slate in Kentucky, so I grabbed one piece. It must have taken three hours to grind it down to axe shape! Grinding is a killer! I used a large piece of PA sandstone to do it. After shaping it, I smoothed it out the best I could with a finer grained rock. Then I used 300 grit sand paper to smooth it out more, then notched it using a file. After a final sanding, I sprayed it with satin clear coat to make the colors pop. A lot of work, but it is extremely satisfying! You will definitely see more ground tools from me later!

Ethan do not do any grinding of chipping indoors. Rocki dust especially silica dust is not good for your lungs and health.

Heavens no! My mom would kill me! I try not to breath it in, but obviously I need a mask. I came back from grinding looking like a ghost.

A little more refinement and that one can be put to use.
