  • Cove Lake Knap In

Today there was a Knap In right down the road from me. There were several vendors present . It was a small event but interesting. I watched a guy use a bow drill to start a fire. I liked his tool kit. He used a deer shoulder bone for a socket at the top of his spindle . I thought it was ingenious that he utilized this bone in such a way. Click image for larger version

I just saw his videos and I bet that he has a hard time keeping up with orders.

Hoss - What's a Tanasi Bow. Is it an NA tribal type bow or what? Just curious.

Hey Matt, That is a neat looking drill kit. Bone and Wood were probably used a lot as a bearing block. A lubricant on the top end of the spindle would help to keep the socket from heating up. I have learned that bone weakens quickly with heat. I like the way he decorated the pieces with fire but you want to be careful with that. I also used fire to "age" a couple of bone harpoon points. The points were so weak that they snapped easily.

I agree, that is an interesting setup, I can see how bone makes a good "bearing" for the spindle to spin on.

I met Joe last time I went to that Knapp in. He makes some really beautiful bows.

            Thanks for sharing the pics!

He has antler inserted at the top of the cane spindle. He says it has almost zero friction but now and then puts a little wax in the socket to reduce any friction even further.

When I was a kid we put wax on our sled runners. That should do a good bit in the socket.
