  • Rawhide Wrapped Knives

Recently when we skinned a couple of hogs I kept some hide raw. I cut a narrow strap for the light weight knife and a wide strap for the heavy knife. Not sure which I like the best. I left the rawhide natural with no color added.

Very cool! Aesthetically, the top one looks better. But I am sure both would work great!

They came out nice. ...I like the top one with the cortex pommel ...that would seem to aid in keeping hide from moving during use I think

Thanks Red, That rawhide shrinks up as it drys. It's so tight that it could never slip. I do like that cortex pommel.

Next hogs you clean you should try them out! I bet you’ll be surprised at their performance, I bet the grabbing action of a stone blade would work great on fatty hogs

Nice work Ron if you are ever out in a survival situation you could re hydrate them and cook the wrap up as pork rinds.

Thanks Johnny, That should work. I hope I can get a satin finish. Don't want them shiny.

Nahhh the natives didn’t seal em up with modern chemicals, you shouldn’t have to either. If they get cruddy just wash em or replace em

Mineral oil works on leather to seal it, leaves it a touch darker, and not all shiny like....I use it on scabbards and whatnot...

That root beer stuff is beautiful. The rawhide is an awesome addition, I really like it.👍👍👍

Ron I like them both ! The small strips match the flaking
(smaller ) on that knife . Then I like the large rawhide on the larger pice . The scale really compliments it .
It feels great to grasp that hide doesn’t it .. good feel .
Wayne ground an antler down on the top for grip and same effect .
          love it

nice work on the wraps Ron

only issue i can see with rawhide is that during use if your hands get sweaty or the handle gets blood soaked is that the raw hide may loosen up a bit

The raw hide makes for a pretty cool looking handle! I have some Jay sent me, I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Thanks for sharing!

I decided to stain the rawhide on these as well as the rawhide wrap on the antler knife.
