  • 3.5" Prairie du Chien point

    I'm pretty sure I know why this point was not finished in ancient times.
    The piece has some good rock and some crumbly rock.
    An ancient percussion flake ended in a big step.

    I'll remove this step from the opposite edge:

    Next I'll get a bifaced edge where this cortex remains:

        I found that piece years back on one of my sites that holds artifacts. My plan was to knap it one day.
        i certainly would have destroyed that thing.. glad I passed it your way… here’s a pic. of a point found in that same field this past spring/ summer and I believe it to be prairie du chien, and probably heat treated…….👍

            Prairie du CHIEN chert, makes up 90 percent of the pieces I find in SW Wisconsin.
