I love snakes! They fascinate me (hmmm…..think Eve said same thing?!). Think of them as lizards without any legs! Taught child how to tell if poisonous, and told her don’t bother ‘em, won’t bother you.
I’d forgotten what an exceptional photographer you are! Looky this Black Snake (?) lookin’ at you!

Great photos. Looks like a Black Racer. Although not poisonous they have a nasty disposition compared to some non poisonous species which if handled gently will not bite, Never picked up a Racer which failed to vigorously attempt to bite me. At least two did. lol Surely it never allowed you to get as close as you appear to be and must have been using a telephoto lens. Racers when closely approached and are aware of your presence usually take a coiled defensive posture and shake the tips of their tails as do rattlesnakes. The fawn pic is super. Where was Ma at that time?

Ah, you SnakeMan! Tiny story SnakeMen: Edisto Island big, not commercially developed. Two local brothers loved snakes, dug two giant pits, one for all the poisonous and one for all nonpoisonous snakes they collected. Had donation box nailed to tree for longtime visitors who knew how to find pits. Fast forward 25 yrs: one of their baby daughters now herpetologist, pits now super-duper, dee-luxe “Serpentarium” with amphitheater, exhibitions, alligator marsh compound, and State Park Rangers lecturing…. Just wonderful!!

I'm not sure where the mother went, but they hang around her a lot.

We have a lot of Black Racers, Milk snakes and Black Snakes. Most of what I photograph are Racers.

Hi Ethan. The snake in the 2nd photo kinda looks like a Black Rat Snake. Rat snakes are relatively docile and are easily handled. They also have the ability to climb trees and are constrictors like King snakes. Because of the lighting I can't tell exactly what the snake in the 1st photo is. The 3rd photo looks like a Racer.Last edited by sailorjoe; 07-20-2021, 01:50 PM.
