Carving bullets was a popular pastime in Civil War camps when the heat of battle was on the near horizon. It gave the mind and hands something to do, and calmed the nerves. My Civil War ancestors perhaps carved a few bullets, as they were all carpenters and metal workers. I carved these two from real Civil War bullets that were found in the reserve area at Chancellorsville Virginia. The flower actually won a carving contest, and I got to spend $100 at their store for more books.

  • 18,000 soldiers and officers in 1918 Camp Dodge Iowa. I read an article about this and they created a special tower to stand on for the photo . They say it was 105 degrees in July when this photo was taken. Had to be rough on the men because WWI uniforms were wool. Because of the distance there are twice as many people in the torch as are in the rest of the body.

Thanks Cecilia, When I was younger I did a lot of hiking to "Off the Grid" waterfalls. Some day I will share a few of those.

    • This one was growing in a parking lot.

          • Ceanothus, or California lilac, is a vibrant, attractive flowering shrub native to North America and found across the west growing wild. One of the facts on California lilac is that it is not a true lilac in the genus Syringa, but it does produce amazingly fragrant blooms from late spring into early summer. I shot this photo in 2012. through my truck window. That bluebird was perched on my side view mirror. I had tints in the windows and the bluebird was attacking his reflection,. I was stealthy with cat like reflexes I circumnavigated the yard and crept up to the passenger side door. I took the photo from the passenger side. I am amazed at how well it came out for a through the window shot.
