  • What raptor did I find?

Spotted this this casualty just off a stream near a meadow and swamp. January

Would love your speculation on species and possible cause of death

It looks like what we have here in Illinois called a Coopers Hawk. Its kinda large for a Cooper though as they are about the size of a pigeon. Strange also as I don't run across that many dead birds of prey. I definitely suspect "fowl play"...
The chase is better than the catch...

I suspect an intra-species, male on male, attack. Interesting that the face is destroyed

Definitely a hawk but not knowing its size, can't speculate on species.

Looks like a sharp skinned, cooper’s, or maybe a goshawk/crested goshawk. His “crest” is kinda jacked, so it’s hard to tell. 😮. How big is it??

See the gloves in the final picture? I assumed it was a juvenile red tail hawk but not sure

I didn't touch it, no feathers

Why didn't I say up front I suspected a red tail hawk?

Hard to say what killed the hawk without an autopsy lol... Looks like a critter maybe fox or racoon was enjoying some Hawk dinner though, you probably scared whatever it was away as you approached. Scavengers and predators often start eating at the quickest and easiest bits to "get while the getting is good". The feathers around the head area look wet like a chew toy...
