I took wife to see a specialist yesterday , to treat her copd. About 150 yards west of the clinic this valley summoned me. I felt guilty walking there and leaving her in the waiting room but I knew it would be a long wait. I walked about 45 minutes and was seeing burnt/fire rock. I was truly surprised not to find even one solitary flint chip ! There were old clothing a few coins and a place that looked like a lovers parking area. I was not prepared to walk rough terrain with tennis shoes on but did so anyway. I’m wondering if the artifacts might of washed down to the bottom? Or if they are all gone from artifact hunters ? There still I felt ought to be some Alibates flint... There was water in the bottom, and the mosquitoes were happy I was there..I’ll take her another time to see the Dr. I’ll be more prepared and walk for a few hours as we will spend the night. The photo is from the NW side of Amarillo...I’m glad I took my wife, she felt bad it is my responsibility to make sure she makes it safely ... I’m not familiar with valley edge hunting, any advice ? My suggestion (WARNING: Cringe alert) would be to crawl on your hands and knees, and if someone asks you what you are doing, just say you are a lost desert traveler dying of thirst.

The next step after that, is jump and run. I can do this easily, but anyone else....well....

      Good luck!

The fire/ burnt rock from burning buffalo dung is there. Caliche has a blue hue, very recognizable ... It is there, but not in abundance. There is very little soil and all the ledges are mostly caliche.. I’ll update, as Lisa usually has to go to that Dr at least once every two months. I’m a sand hunter but I’m willing to try anywhere....

JJ you mentioned a couple things there wrong shoes and your wife being left alone in the Dr's office. Maybe nothing popped up in the way of an artifact because you had a lot of other stuff on your mind. Best of luck in your next hunt.

I think they used to call people like us “idiot savants”. Got several higher degrees w/honors, but drive 2hrs north instead of south, wear two different colored shoes sometimes, forget pay bills. Really shoulda had full time caretaker whole life....

One of my first dig sites was some old dirt roads my Dad would take us to that were on a bluff above a lake. A Creek bisected the campsite and there was an old iron kettle in one of the creek basins. It was a cool place. Every time we broke for lunch my dad would walk around the dirt road and find coins. I could never figure out where all that money came from when I was a yougin. I was 6 or 7 years old. Anyway when I became a teenager and got my license I figured it out. People would go up there at night and drink and camp out. All of that change was just falling out of peoples pockets during the night. My brother and I even found a six pack of Hulls Export in the iron kettle one weekend. Lousy beer LOL Many years later I went back with a metal detector. I found a million aluminum can pull tabs. Then I found a piece of real history. My Dad was fond of Three Muskteers bars. I found a foil packet wrapped around some old hot dog and french fries wrappers and a Three musketeer bar wrapper. It brought me back to those days as a kid digging with an old Tee Handle WWII shovel next to my mentor. Well sorry for highjacking your post I guess I started to ramble there but the coins just got me to thinking about how much stuff people loose in a lifetime and how much stuff we find as finders.

I like hijacking , I’m glad the coins brought back good memories ! Also I like the stories ! I don’t metal detect but old grass football fields are loaded with coin, from track meets. The coins fell out of the kids warm ups by the handful !

It’s hard to believe how much Amarillo is growing ! Use to be simple to drive around but now, not so much. 500 K houses going up and businesses ... It’s crazy !
