  • The herring are here for the holidays

well finally put together a good catch of herring. I'm in the process of pickling them and was hoping to have some ready for thanksgiving day but it's going to be at least a few days more. Caught about 30 yesterday morning. I got all the scales off, bagged and iced them yesterday. This morning I filleted them and put them in saltwater brine. Tomorrow I'll put them in jars with onions and pickling solution. In a few more days it will be time to enjoy.

On my mothers side I am German and danish. We grew up eating pickled herring, smoked eels and codfish especially around the holidays.

Hey Kaz, I love pickled herring. Usually eat them on crackers.

Hey Ron I like to put some in a small dish with some sour cream and eat them on those little square pumpernickel breads. Can't wait 😊

Pickled/preserved fish is a great thing! My grandparents used to do that with carp.

Here is one that my wife's Spanish side does (we made this one this weekend.) Can be any seafood, but this was mostly crab and octopus preserved with vinegar and lime juice. Similar to ceviche, but you cook most of the items first.

That sounds good. I've done ceviche a few times with porgy and trigger fish.
